Hoops: Community Portraits by Bill Bamberger
March 2019 – January 2020
Christine Lefebvre Design provided exhibition design services for HOOPS: Community Portraits by Bill Bamberger. The exhibition at the National Building Museum presented “a rich and diverse selection of private and community basketball courts from around the nation and across the globe” — photographs about the places occupied by basketball courts, not so much the nets themselves — all taken by renowned photographer Bill Bamberger.
CLD provided space planning and developed elevations and floor plans for the 2,800-square-foot exhibition, and designed the visual identity — including color palette, typography, and graphic design. CLD playfully explored the concept of “hoops” by specifying that the gallery’s distinctive arches be painted in bright colors, and carrying this graphic element onto the floor by way of custom vinyl floor decals. Working closely with the curator, photograph arrangements were carefully considered. CLD provided graphic templates to NBM’s in-house design department for final production artwork.
“Just wanted to share how much people like and appreciate the design of the exhibition! I have had great feedback from folks not just commenting on the photographs, but on the colors and playful nature of the galleries. Congratulations — and thank you for all your thorough and speedy work.”
